A total of 2,500 hectares of agriculture and fishery products were badly damaged by heavy rains and floods which ravaged Zamboanga city this week.

Al-Jihan Edding, Council Committee on Agriculture Chairperson, said that at least 300 hectares of rice field and 200 hectares of cornfield were affected by the rains.

A total of 2,000 hectares of fishponds were also damaged.

The Agriculture office is still conducting validation on the actual damage sustained by the Agriculture and Fisheries sector.

Validation on actual figures are needed as basis for recommendation and request for support from the Department of Agriculture and  the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, said Edding.

The crops were affected by flash floods brought about by continuous heavy downpour due to the Intertropical Convergence Zone.  (RGAAGo)
