The Sangguniang Panlungsod of Zamboanga has placed the city under a State of Calamity during a special session held at the Sangguniang Panlungsod yesterday morning.

“Upon the request of the Mayor to declare Zamboanga city under a state of calamity considering the fact that so many barangays were greatly affected as a result of the rain, the city will be able to address the problems facing these barangays by the use of the calamity fund,” said presiding officer and Vice Mayor Cesar Iturralde.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office and the City Social Welfare Office will be in the forefront in the use of the calamity fund.

“The barangay on their own can declare and that is another funding,” Iturralde added.

The Vice Mayor explained that the calamity fund represents five percent of the city’s budget.  It shall be used for relief service, infrastructure projects and social service to assist victims of the calamity.

For her part, Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco Salazar thanked the council for the concurrence.

“To all barangays, you may now be able to pass a resolutin for the declaration of the state of calamity. It will also be utilized by the national government agency that will need this as a certification for the employees of government to utilize their Pagibig and GSIS emergency loans.

The city has a total of 3,666 families with 18,330 individuals affected by the calamity.  There are 158 totally damaged and 327 partially damaged houses as of Wednesday. (R.G Antonet Go)
