UNIVERSIDAD DE ZAMBOANGA fulfills the commitment and engagement to upkeep the sports and fitness development in Zamboanga City as the university inaugurates the UZ WEIGHTLIFTING TRAINING CENTER at the Institute of Human Kinetics along Veterans Avenue, this is in honor of UZ’s Technical High School Alumna, Ms. Hidilyn Diaz as the country’s Rio Olympics Silver Medalist in 2016.

In October 2016, during the Alumni Homecoming of Ms. Diaz, UZ pledged to build a weightlifting training facility in her name, a year after, UZ has made this promise a reality in the presence of UZ President Atty. Linda Eustaquio-Lim and members of the UZ Board of Directors and Hon. Maria Isabelle “Beng” Climaco-Salazar along with the distinguished Zamboanga City Officials.

Mayor Beng acknowledges Universidad de Zamboanga and the Eustaquio Family for the significant contributions not only in making Zamboanga City as a prime Education Hub but now as a Sports and Fitness Hub in Mindanao through this world class facility.

UZ Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Abram M. Eustaquio, who personally supervised the completion of the UZ Weightlifting Training Center emphasized on the quality of the facility that the institution has acquired for Zamboanga City’s weightlifting athletes.

The university made an investment of over ten million pesos worth of world class features from Japan’s Uesaka Barbell Facility, official partner of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF). The Uesaka BarbellFacility is in existence for 88 years. Uesaka, as a facility provider has made six Olympics appearances since 1964.

The UZ Weightlifting Training Center that has Computerized Analytics for the progress and bearing of weightlifting athletes is considered as one of the finest Olympic Centers in Asia as mentioned by Mr. Eustaquio. Thus, he said that UZ pursues to bring athletes to greater heights of sports in the country and across the world, turning Zamboanga City as a home of the Olympic Champions like Ms. Hidilyn Diaz. He reminded the athletes to be like Ms. Diaz to not forget and look back to their roots likewise be a source of hope for the country.

City Councilor Elbert Atilano expressed his foremost gratitude to the late UZ President, Arturo “Archie” Eustaquio who all the way and consistently supported the endeavors and undertakings of the weightlifting sports as a former official of the Philippine Weightlifting Association.

Ms. Diaz as a UZ graduate has become a true example of UZ’s Vision to nurture socially responsible transformational leaders as she is now an inspiration in the country’s sports arena. She is continuously grateful to her Alma Mater for building a world class weightlifting facility believing that it is not for her but for the many budding and would be weightlifting athletes of Zamboanga City. In the Philippines’ Weightlifting National Team, 16 young athletes hail from our city and of which, 10 athletes belong to Universidad de Zamboanga.

To note, UZ has produced successful athletes in the field of Basketball, Taekwondo, Boxing, and Weightlifting among other sports. UZ is also steadfast to help the Local Government of Zamboanga City to ensure sustainable support for the fulfillment of the city athletes’ allowances and developments on sports psychology, nutrition and rehabilitation for the athletes.
