2,600 hectares of farmland destroyed by rains Print

More than 2,600 hectares of farmland were damaged by heavy rains and flood that fell in Zamboanga last week.

According to data released by city hall, a total of 2,651.24 hectares of farmland and fishponds were destroyed.

Of this number, 1,616 hectares represent  fish ponds and 1,015 hectares are farmlands destroyed by the calamity.

The livelihood of nearly 2,500 farmers and fishpond operators and workers were affected.

Based on data, damage to the agriculture sector amounted to P155.6-million.

Meanwhile, nearly 5,000 families were affected by the calamity which struck 26 barangays in the city.

Based on data given by city Hall, a total of 4,748 families have either evacuated or were affected by the weather disturbance.

The number also translates to 23,279 persons.

The government has also recorded 9 deaths as a result of the calamity. (Liza Jocson)
