Fisherman dies in dynamite explosion

A 19-year old-fisherman  was killed when his improvised dynamite explosive accidentally exploded while he was fishing out in the sea off Barangay Muti, in the city’s east coast yesterday morning.

According to Police Sr. Insp. Crisanto S. Yabo Jr., OIC station commander of Curuan Police Station, the fatality was identified as Otoh Angkay y Totoh,  19 yearls old, married, of Sitio  Palo-Palo, Barangay Muti.

Initial Police investigation disclosed that said victim has been practicing dynamite fishing or blast fishing as what has been the common practice of some fishermen in remote coastal areas of Zamboanga City.

The Police said that Angkay went out for blast fishing at 10:11 a.m. and while out at sea his dynamite improvised explosive accidentally went off killing himself.

Investigators from the Curuan Police Station investigation the case said that body of the fisherman was already brought by the family and other fishermen to his residence at Sitio  Palo-Palo, Muti.

Families of the victims opted not to give additional details on the incident.

The City Police Office with its 11 Police Stations has been closely coordinating with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and City Agriculturist’s Office in the campaign against illegal fishing in Zamboanga City.- Dan Toribio
