Zamboanga City Medical Center (ZCMC) is facing difficulty in providing proper medical care to patients due to a congestion  problem currently plaguing the facility.

Dozens of patients reportedly stay longer than necessary at the hospital’s emergency room before being transferred to wards due to lack of space.

The congested situation in the emergency room gives rise to problems in cleanliness and ventilation, thus affecting the patients’ health.

“Pahirapan talaga for our patients.  Hindi siya magandang sitwasyon.  You want them to get better so even if we provide them the medical management nahihirapan pa rin sila because the environment is not ideal,”  said Dr. Maribel Felisario, ZCMC Public Affairs Director.

Felisario said that some of the patients stay at the emergency room for days before they can be transferred to the ward section.

Patients in the emergency room will have to wait for a patient from the ward to be discharged and have the place cleaned before they can occupy the space.

Felisario attributed the dire situation at the medical center to the construction of one of its buildings known as Tower 1.

The construction resulted to a temporary loss of 40 beds in the Pediatric ward.

The hospital also lost 15 beds in the Senior Citizens ward and 38 beds in ward 6.

The Tower 1 construction project is expected to be completed within six to eight months.

Tower 1 is a five-storey building which will house a business center, an operating room complex, 100 beds for surgery, 100 beds for pediatric patients, 50 beds for senior citizens and 50 private rooms.  (RGAAGo)
