A policeman who was formerly assigned in Vitali Police Station was charged for Malversation of Public Funds and Absence without Official Leave (AWOL) after he allegedly absconded with an issued M16 rifle.

The charges against PO1 Mohammad Nur S. Asaali were forwarded to the City Prosecutor’s Office under I.S # IX-06-INQ-17J-0441 dated November 6, 2017.

A police report disclosed that last October 15, 2013, a former Supply Police non-commissioned Officer identified as SPO1 Edgar R. Magdula, issued an M16A1 Elisco with Serial No. RP052633, with one long and one short 5.56 magazines, and 50 rounds of ammunition to Asaali when he was still stationed at the Vitali Police Station.

Last July 4, 2014 Asaali was reassigned to Zamboanga Del Norte Provincial Police Office but left without clearing his accountability from the Vitali Police Station.

The Vitali Police Station sent three demand notices to Asaali to return the firearm but he failed to comply and he never showed up.

This prompted the Vitali police to file appropriate charges against Asaali with the Department of Justice.  (Dan Toribio)
