An alleged notorious gun for hire criminal was killed while an 8-year-old girl also died from a stray bullet during a shootout between the suspect and policemen in Malamawi Island, Isabela City last Sunday afternoon. Another innocent civilian was also wounded during the heavy exchange of gun fires.

A police report showed that around 4 p.m. operatives of the Isabela City Police Station led by Insp. Hatta Turabin Abdullah  along with a SWAT team headed by Sr. Insp. Yashier Sarikin were responding to a report about the presence of a heavily armed group in Barangay Tampalan, Malamawi.

The policemen were acting on the report  of Mrs. Norfaisa Baakal Jamasali who informed them that a certain Ben Haraman Hapas, a known murderer, was leading a heavily armed group and was reportedly looking  for Dennis Baakal, a member of the Citizen Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU).

However, while lawmen were still approaching the place, Hapas and his companions opened fire on them prompting the policemen to fire back.

A brief shootout ensued before the armed group escaped.

Hapas was killed on the spot, and his body was left behind by the retreating group.

During the shootout, Delahana Malanji, the 8-year-old girl was also killed after she was hit a stray bullet in the back portion of the body. Police said that the child died on the spot.

Taila Ayula Singapula, 64, widow was also hit in her left upper thigh during the crossfire.

CAFGU member Baakal, who was the target of the armed group and who was along with the lawmen during the firefight, was also wounded after  sustaining a bullet wound in the right ear.

Meanwhile, the police investigators said that the slain gun for hire suspect who  was  a resident of Barangay Moboh Basakan, Mohammad Ajul Municipality is linked in the killing of Barangay Kagawad Alhassen Kaya.—Dan Toribio
