A proposed ordinance prohibiting the use of backpacks during big events in Zamboanga city was passed on first reading during the Sanggunian Panlungsod’s regular session yesterday.

Proposed ordinance 2017-44, authored by Councilor Josephine Pareja, is aimed towards regulating and prohibiting the carrying of backpacks, glass bottles, bladed objects, hazardous chemicals or materials and other harmful objects within the premises where celebration of fiestas, festivals, parades and other big events in the city of Zamboanga are held.

The ordinance has passed first reading and is now being scheduled for public hearing.

Officials and personnel of the Zamboanga police and other agencies involved in the crafting and implementation of security measures are expected to attend the hearing.

Pareja said that violators face penalties ranging from community service to payment of fines for violation of the ordinance, if ever such measure is passed.

“Everytime tiene kita event, el Alcalde ta pasa el executive order, but we don’t have any ordinance for the matter.  Just like other cities in the Philippines celebrating ansina clase de festival, tiene sila ordinansa,” Pareja explained.

Pareja hopes that the ordinance will be passed and implemented in time for the Dia de Zamboanga festival on February 2018.

The lady councilor will reportedly request Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco- Salazar to certify the ordinance as urgent.  (RGAAGo)
