In an absolute display of unity and love for the city, the barangay of Maasin is perhaps the first barangay to concretize their support to the stance of the city against the inclusion of any part or portions of Zamboanga under the substate.

Misael “Doglo” Bernardo, barangay chairman of Maasin, said its council passed Resolution 25 series of 2011 “strongly supporting the Sangguniang Panlungsod Resolution, authored by Councilor Gerky  Valesco, Jr. not to include Zamboanga City nor part or portions of the city under the proposed substate of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

Bernardo, an active leader from the west coast, said while it is important that the government panel should hear the side of the MILF, it is also equally important to hear too and respect the consistent stand of the people of Zamboanga.

“Maasin’s council resolution reflects the true sentiments of our populace in my area. It is high time for our people to join hands with that of our city officials led by Mayor Celso Lobregat, Congresswoman Beng Climaco, Congressman Erbie Fabian, and the City Council so that we will have a strong voice,” Bernardo said.

Last week, the City Council unanimously approved a council resolution authored by Councilor Gerky Valesco expressing such steadfast position and addressed to the Government chief peace negotiator Marvic Leonen and President Adviser on Peace Process Teresita Deles.

“We are also for peace in Mindanao, but we believe in proper consultation and involving ourselves as stakeholders for peace in Mindanao, the Maasin resolution reads. It was authored by Kagawad Cecilia Medallo, duly seconded by Kagawads Rosita Bacoboy and Kagawad Romeo Praico.
