Personnel of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) rescued a whale which was stranded near an island in the city’s east coast last Tuesday.

The whale was identified as a melon-headed whale measuring 2.38 meters in length and weighing more than 100 kilograms.

Gefel Hope Mamhot, BFAR Regulations Officer, said that the whale became disoriented and had difficulty in navigation and thus became trapped in Bilang Bilang Island, Sitio Mulu-muluan Barangay Mercedes last Tuesday.

The whale suffered no injuries.

A resident of the island volunteered to take care of the whale until it showed signs of recovery.

BFAR and City Veterinarian personnel came to the whale's aide and brought the mammal offshore using a banca last Wednesday.

He said that may this incident be replicated by individuals and barangays in case they will see sea creatures stranded in their area. (RGAAGo)
