The Lamitan City Council is supporting a bill filed by Zamboanga Congressman Celso Lobregat to increase the travel allowance of all government officials and personnel.

The move was formalized through Council resolution number 2017-279 filed passed during the council regular session last Wednesday.

House Resolution 243, authored by Congressman Lobregat, urges President Rodrigo Duterte to issue an Executive Order increasing the current daily local travel allowance (per diem) of government officials and personnel.

The resolution proposes more than a hundred percent increase, from P800 to P2,000.

Lamitan councilors say that the present amount of P800 is no longer realistic due to increased prices in food and accommodation.

Councilor Clarito San Juan described the House Resolution as “noble,” since the proposal, once approved, will make government officials more relaxed when travelling on official business as they will no longer worry on shortage of funds.

Councilor Joaquin Puri Jr., co-sponsor of the resolution, said that the increase in allowance will help ordinary government workers.

Puri said that the last adjustment on travel allowances for government workers was made in the year 2004.

“It is already 13 years since it was adjusted,”  Puri pointed out.

Councilors present during the Sangguniang Panlungsod session are Rima Hassan, Malik Uyag, Myra Kallahal, Nur-in Akbar, Arleigh Eisma, Noel Baul, Sali Polo, and Marvin Baisara.  (Allen Abastillas)
