The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) has revealed that they already cleared a total of 81 barangays in Zamboanga Peninsula, Basilan and Sulu, from illegal drugs since August of this year.

Lyndon Aspacio, PDEA 9 regional director, said in an interview that declaring a particular barangay as drug-free means there are no longer identified drug users, pushers, drug trafficking activities, drug den, and plantation in the said area. Aside from these, the Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council must also be functional especially in the community rehabilitation.

He explained that a regional oversight committee is in-charge of declaring a barangay drug-free, and this is composed of the PDEA as the head, together with the police, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), local government, and the Department of Health. It will take some three to six months to fully declare a barangay drug- free.

For Zamboanga Sibugay, a barangay in Tungawan was declared drug cleared, 60 barangays in Zamboanga Del Norte,, 15 barangays in Basilan, four barangays in Sulu where the three are located in Talipao and one in Hadji Panglima Tahil.

Only one barangay in Zamboanga City which is Dulian Upper Pasonanca has been declared as drug-free.

“We congratulate them sa nagawa nila I maintain na nila yung drug cleared status sana hindi na magkaroon uli ng mga drug users and pushers sa lugar nila,” Aspacio said.

However, the PDEA stopped the clearing of barangays as the police are currently not involved in anti-illegal drug operations. The police are needed as they are part of the oversight committee.

The regional director stressed that in the anti-drug campaign, whole of nation approach is needed which involves the government, community, business sector, and religious sector.

“ Aside from these, it must start in the family because if the children were taught well, they will not engage in illegal drugs,” the PDEA regional director stressed. (R.G. A A. Go)
