Around 300 delegates are expected to attend the 2nd National  Sardines Industry Congress to be held at a local hotel in Zamboanga City starting today.

Senator Cynthia Villar  will be the guest of honor and keynote speaker during the opening ceremonies.

Roberto “Boboy” Valerio, lead organizer said that the sardines industry congress aims to highlight Zamboanga City as the sardine capital of the Philippines while stressing that all its canning products are of world-class quality.

“With the holding of the 2nd National Sardines Industry Congress here in the city we would like to highlight again that Zamboanga City is the sardines capital of the country and it will always be,” Valerio, who is also the executive director of the Zamboanga Industrial Group, stressed to Zamboanga Times in an interview.

He also disclosed that their group will also establish a sardine trade exhibit at Garden Orchid Hotel where assorted canning products as well as equipment, supplies and spare parts used or related in the canning production shall also be displayed.

The congress, which starts today and will end on Thursday, will be participated in by all stakeholders such as the academe, local government units (LGUs), national government agencies, business industries related to sardines, fisher folks, equipment suppliers and providers.

Valerio said that a big part of the delegation will also come from national policy makers like the Bureau of Food and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) headed by retired Commodore Eduardo Guongona.

The BFAR chief will be one of the special guests of the 3-day congress while Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol will be the guest speaker during the closing ceremonies.

Currently, Zamboanga City has 11 canning factories where 10 of them are fully-operational and are employing thousands of employees and local workers. The canning industry also contributes millions of pesos in local revenues for the city government.

Valerio also stressed that 90 percent of the country’s demand of sardines is being supplied by the canning industry of Zamboanga City.

Meanwhile, Mayor Beng Climaco, as the city’s chief executive, will welcome the guests and delegates in today’s opening  of the sardine congress.---(Jemuel E. Mojica)
