The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Regional Office-9  officially starts the implementation of closed fishing season in Zamboanga city today.

This year's closed fishing season starts today and will be in effect until March 1 next year.

For this period, parties are prohibited from killing or catching sardines in specified areas for the purpose of enhancing propagation of this species.

The basis for the implementation of the program is BFAR Administrative Circular 255 series of 2014 which establishes the Closed Fishing Season for the conservation of sardines in East Sulu Sea, Basilan Strait and Sibuguey Bay.

Meanwhile, Labor leader Joe Suan said that more than 35,000 workers from around 40 companies in Zamboanga peninsula will reportedly be affected by the implementation of the directive.

The workers are reportedly given their benefits as assistance to cope with temporary loss of work. (Allen Abastillas)
