Amid a tearful farewell last Tuesday, Councilor Charlie Mariano revealed plans for a comeback to Zamboanga politics in 2019.

In an interview with local reporters, Mariano said that he will still be running for public office in 2019.

“I’m committed to coming back because my only lifelong quest is public service.  I cannot work in a private capacity.  Pwede siguro but my love is really in politics,”  Mariano said.

Mariano said that he is waiting for the decision on a Petition for a Writ of Certiorari that he has filed with the Supreme Court.

For now, however, Mariano said that he has decided to step down as Councilor.

In an interview, Comelec District 1 Election Officer Atty Stephen Roy Cañete opined that Mariano can still join the political race in 2019.

“Pwede si Mariano man file COC y pwede man question disuyu filing el interested party,” Cañete said.

In  2016 he was disqualified for  reasons of moral turpitude, for 2019 we cannot say that the 2016 disqualification also applies, Cañete added.

Cañete told listeners during a radio interview the other week that petitioners to the disqualification case filed against Mariano must file a motion to execute the decision of the Commission on Elections en banc to remove Mariano from his position.

Cañete himself served the Writ of Execution last Tuesday to Mariano during the Council Regular Session based on the order of Comelec Acting Chairman Christian Lim.

In a later interview, Cañete said that the execution of the decision can either be done by motion or moto proprio, contradicting his earlier statement on radio.  (RGAAGo)
