A Zamboanga councilor is supporting the conduct of a community fireworks display to replace the ban on the use of fireworks by individuals mandated by a city ordinance.

Councilor BG Guingona said that he is amenable to bringing back the fireworks display, but this should be organized and managed by the community.

Guingona is the author of City Ordinance 2014-35, The Firecracker Ban Ordinance of 2014.

Guingona proposed the ordinance three years ago to mitigate the effects of a trauma experienced by residents from loud explosions brought about by the 2013 Zamboanga Siege.

Guingona believes that the effects of the siege have somehow worn off and thus residents can once again enjoy a fireworks display but this time, to be managed by community officials.

Prior to the passage of the ordinance in 2014, Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco- Salazar issued Executive Order BC23-2013 to temporarily ban the use and sale of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices within the City of Zamboanga.

This is in response to a resolution passed by the City Council of Zamboanga calling for a temporary ban on the sale and use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices.

Last Wednesday, City Hall issued a press release reminding the public that the firecracker ban is still in effect.  (RGAAGo)
