A member of the New People’s Army was killed while three soldiers were wounded during a clash between government troops and the rebels in Lakewood, Zamboanga del Sur last Friday.

Police Regional Information Officer Chief Insp. Helen Galvez disclosed that the three-hour encounter took place at around 11:23 am in Mount Ganaan, Sitio Km. 22, barangay Gasa, Lakewood, Zamboanga del Sur.

Galvez said that government forces who engaged with  more or less 30 armed NPAs were the 53rd Infantry Battalion Charlie Company led by 1Lt. Justin Michael Rabino and SSgt. Macasling.After the exchange of gun fire,  troops recovered the body of a slain NPA member, an M16 rifle, an M4 rifle, an M203 grenade launcher, one hand guard of M16 rifle, 10 backpacks, jogging pants, medical and dental kits with medicines, 4 rifle grenades, 2 magazines of M16 rifle, 2 magazines of AK-47 rifle, one APM, one NPA flag and two units of two-way handheld radio.

Three soldiers were also wounded and were identified as Sgt. Kasim who sustained a bullet wound in the shoulder, PFC De Guzman who was shot in theshoulder and Private Bajao with gunshot wound on the head.

The report added that government troops clashed with the group of Secom-KARA, WMRPC.

Wounded soldiers were taken to the hospital for treatment.Military troops are still on hot pursuit operations as of presstime. – Dan Toribio
