More than 1,500 bandits have been neutralized in various operations launched by the Western MIndanao Command (Westmincom) this year.

This figure was obtained in an accomplishment report released by the Western MIndanao Command during the Joint Coordinating Conference held yesterday.

Based on the report, a total of 1,531 bandits have either been killed, captured or surrendered in Westmincom's area of operations since January until the present time.

A total of 354 members of the Abu Sayyaf Group were neutralized since January 1 this year.  Of this number, a total of 136 or 40% have surrendered to government forces.

A total of 127 ASG bandits were also killed while 90 have been apprehended by government troops.

Around 230 firearms of the Abu Sayyaf have also been recovered, seized or have been surrendered to the Westmincom.

The Abu Sayyaf members are operating in the areas of Sulu and Basilan.

In Lanao del Sur, A total of 995 members of the Maute Group were also neutralized during the Marawi conflict.

Troops were also able to recover 956 firearms belonging to the bandits during the conflict which started on May 23 this year.

In Central Mindanao, a total of 182 members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) were neutralized due to sustained efforts by the Joint Task Force Central.

From 139 violent incidents in 2016, the number of clashes decreased to only about 70 this year, based on the report.  (Liza Jocson)
