Zamboanga City was 1st place in the Best Highly Urbanized City DRRM Category in the Regional Level of the 2017 Gawad Kalasag Search with an average grade of 94% qualifying it for the national level competition. The city’s 94 percentile grade was a great leap from the previous 86% rating. The city was judged based on the Gawad Kalasag checklist which evaluated pertinent documents, equipment and facilities among others, as well as an actual assessment by the selection committee.

The competition aims to recognize outstanding performance of local disaster councils (LDCCs), private/volunteer organizations, local, national and international NGOs, donor agencies, and the communities as major stakeholders in implementing significant disaster risk management projects and activities and in providing humanitarian response and assistance to affected communities.
