Jail and local government officials spearheaded the groundbreaking ceremonies of the new Zamboanga City Reformatory Center in Barangay Talisayan, this city yesterday morning.

The multi-million project involves the construction of 23 type A buldings to house 13,000 inmates.

The national government allocated the budget of P194,079,455.57 for the project while the city government donated the 5-hectare property in Talisayan to house the structure.

The project will be undertaken by St Gerald Construction Development Corporation under a two-year period.

Among the officials who witnessed the ground breaking ceremony are Zamboanga Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco- Salazar, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology Deputy for Operations Supt Allan Vargas, Zamboanga Jail Warden Nathaniel Aljas and Jail Inspector Fredelyn T. Zamora.

The construction of the new facility is being implemented in response to the problem of jail congestion at the present Zamboanga City Reformatory Center.

The current ZCRC, a facility built for 800 inmates, now houses around 3,000 detainees.

Among the detainees being housed at the present facility are high risk inmates such as members of the Abu Sayyaf group and crime syndicate members and drug pushers. (Ely Dumaboc)
