The security situation in Mindanao is currently peaceful but remains volatile given the desire of terrorists and lawless elements to wreak havoc in the region at any given time.

“The situation especially in Western Mindanao is volatile.  Peaceful but anytime can erupt like a Marawi crisis situation,”  Galvez said.

“Westmincom is being confronted by many threat groups:  ASG, Maute, Islamiyah, lawless elements, breakaway groups.  We cannot relax on that,” Galvez added.

Aside from the presence of lawless elements, Galvez  attributed the volatile situation to the drug menace which authorities are still trying to combat.

There are reportedly 1-million loose firearms in the entire Mindanao region, some of which are in the hands of lawless groups.

“We cannot lower our guards, the presence of armed groups still poses a serious threat,”  Galvez stressed.

Galvez ordered troops in Mindanao to be on  “maximum presence” for the holidays.

Galvez however said that a violent situation may not happen in the near future but stressed that terrorists and lawless groups are compounding their efforts in rebuilding their organization after their defeat in Marawi.

The military earlier said that they are concentrating their efforts in countering the misinformation being spread by threat groups by coordinating closely with religious leaders and the Sultanate.  (Liza Jocson)
