Pasonanca National High School principal Mr. Jonathan Silao was teary-eyed and overwhelmed upon formally receiving the newly constructed (3) storey (17) classroom building yesterday morning.

“We have received today the best Christmas gift from Congressman Celso Lobregat, DepEd and DPWH, this building will accommodate 80% of the students, it is an answered prayer,” Silao said.

He also said that they will be vacating their present faculty rooms and office, to accommodate the students who are staying in the makeshift rooms inside the school premises also.

“The very purpose, I asked Congressman Lobregat and DPWH to schedule the turn-over this week is that I wanted the students to celebrate their respective Christmas party for the first time inside their classrooms and not under the tree,” Silao said.

With the population of some 1,330 students at present, Pasonanca National High School is one of the growing secondary institution in the city today.

For his part, Pasonanca Barangay Chairman Efigenio Julian also stated the history of Pasonanca NHS which started from nothing and being squatters inside Pasonanca Elementary School during the time when now Congressman Lobregat was then the city mayor way back three years ago.

“We started this high school in Pasonanca Elementary School as squatter there and we are using their dilapidated buildings, we started from nothing,” Julian said.

He said that when Councilor Rudy Lim authored City Ordinance No.441- the creation of Pasonanca National High School, it was followed by the legislation of Congressman Lobregat in congress where he passed House Bill 5365 which separates Don Pablo Lorenzo Memorial High School-Pasonanca Annex and converted it to Pasonanca National High School. The bill was passed and made into law under Republic Act 10836 as legislated by Lobregat.

Congressman Lobregat said that in the month of September last year, he personally visited the school together with the DPWH and DepEd officials to make an assessment of the buildable space where more buildings can be constructed to cater the problem in the student- classroom ratio of the Pasonanca NHS.

At present, there are only seventeen good classrooms with nine makeshift rooms in the area being used by the 1,330 students.

“We identified possible area where we can possibly construct a four-storey,20- classroom building which can be included in the 2018 budget,” Lobregat said.

With the present population of the Grades 7 to 11 in placed, the school needs additional classrooms next year for the entry of the Grade 12 students which will definitely increase the school’s population.

Present during the inauguration yesterday were DepEd Asst. Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Julieto Fernandez, DPWH Asst. District Engineer Tony Gonzales, Councilors Myra Paz Valderrosa- Abubakar and Rudy Lim, the GPTA officials and faculty members of PNHS. – Dexter Yap
