Three fishing boats were apprehended last Tuesday off the coast of Margosatubig Zamboanga del Sur for violating the fishing ban on sardines.

Supt Salbino C. Piad, Regional Maritime Unit-9 Chief, identified the three fishing boats as the FB Yasser, FB Zurphaikal, and the FB Almudi.

Troopers under the 903rd Maritime Police Station based in Pagadian City were conducting seaborne operations in the area when they spotted the three commercial boats fishing within the 5-kilometer zone.

During inspection, troopers saw that the boats were loaded with sardines, fish that are banned from being caught during the three-month long fishing ban imposed by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR.)

The ban started last December 1.

The boats were anchored at Margosatubig and turned over to the Municipal Agriculture Office for tempoary custody.

Charges are being prepared against the violators.  (Allen Abastillas)
