Mayor urges warning amid "Vinta" entry Print

Mayor Beng Climaco has called on the public to be vigilant and cautious in light of incoming tropical storm Vinta.

“We advise the public to be cautious as Zamboanga City expects light to moderate rains and thunderstorms in the coming days due to tropical storm Vinta. People residing in flood-prone area as well as coastal areas should take necessary steps to mitigate disaster,” Climaco said in her advisory on Facebook.

The chief executive earlier directed the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) to prepare necessary measures for the safety and security of residents, particularly those residing in flood-prone area.

CDRRMO head Dr. Elmeir Apolinario Thursday morning convened an emergency meeting of all line agencies involved in preparedness and response amidst the threat of TS Vinta which is expected to hit Zambo Peninsula either Friday afternoon (Dec. 22)  or Saturday morning and to last until Dec. 24. The meeting discussed administrative and logistical support based on the checklist for disaster mitigation. Response agencies are on standby 24/7, as vulnerable areas are being closely monitored. The public is advised to take precautionary measures to mitigate calamity.

Climaco advised residents to monitor different media platforms and social media for updates and information, and likewise called on the barangays to be vigilant, and through the BDRRMCs, act as first responders in cases of emergencies.

On Thursday, December 21, the state weather bureau issued a severe weather bulletin for several Visayas and Mindanao regions, including the Zamboanga Peninsula, for incoming tropical storm Vinta.

According to the advisory, Vinta has maintained speed and direction moving towards Eastern Mindanao as of December 21, 11 AM. It is expected to make landfall over the Caraga – Davao region area between late evening of December 21 and the morning of December 22.

The advisory forecasted scattered to widespread moderate to heavy rains over Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Caraga, Davao Region, and Northern Mindanao within 24 hours. Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 2 has been declared for Surigao del Norte, including the Siargao Islands, Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, and Northern Davao Oriental.

Meanwhile, several Visayas and Mindanao areas, including Zamboanga del Sur and possibly Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga Sibugay, has been placed under Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 1.  (Jasmine Mohammadsali)
