Vinta death toll now 73, 77 still missing Print

More than 70 persons are still missing while a total of 73 have died in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Vinta’s visit to Zamboanga Peninsula late last week.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) regional office 9 reports that a total of 73 were killed while 59 were injured while 77 are still reported missing in Zamboanga Peninsula.

Ivan Eric Salvador, DSWD 9 Information Officer said that 69 deaths were registered in Zamboanga del Norte and four for Zamboanga Sibugay. 76 missing registered from Zamboanga del Norte and one from Zamboanga Sibuguay. All 59 injured were registered from Zamboanga del Norte.

As of December 26, 2017 the number of affected barangays is 207 and 20 municipalities.

There are 20,008 affected families which translates to 94,862 individuals.

Currently there are 83 evacuation centers housing 4,998 families which translates to 24,974 individuals. A total of  2,885 individuals opted to stay outside the evacuation centers.

Affected areas for Zamboanga del Norte are Katipunan, Sergio Osmena, Dipolog, Salug, Siocon, Sibuco, Leon Postigo, Godod, Labason, Liloy, Sirawai, Gutalac, and Baliguian.

For Zamboanga del Sur, affected areas are Ramon Magsaysay, Bayog, and Tambulig while the municipalities of Siay, Kabasalan and Imelda in  Zamboanga Sibugay were reportedly affected.

According to Salvador, the office already provided more than 6000 family food packs  and  hygiene kits.

The office has also provided mats, pots and pans.

He also assured that social workers are in the area to respond to the needs of these victims and they have enough funds.

“We request our residents to cooperate with local officials and responders especially on situation like this in order to facilitate efficient response, rescue, and provision of interventions,” Salvador said Salvador added that they encourage families and communities to equip themselves with knowledge on disaster preparedness to avoid casualties and loss of properties.

Vinta entered Zamboanga Peninsula last Friday bringing strong winds and rains. (RGAAGo)
