A retired judge survived a grenade attack which injured the suspect and a policeman in Casa de Saavedra Subdivision along Crispin Atilano Street in Barangay Tetuan yesterday morning.

The attack took place at the gate of a house owned by retired judge Ernesto Rosario.

A certain Antonio Pioquinto dela Cruz, 57, married to Rosario’s house helper Maria Magdalena was said to be responsible for the explosion.

A day ago, Antonio and Maria Magdalena were fighting over the reported failure of the woman’s niece to launder Antonio’s clothes.

Antonio then told Magdalena to order her niece to leave the house.

The judge then told Antonio to stay out of the affairs of his residence, an act which angered Antonio even more.

The altercation between Antonio and his wife continued on until yesterday morning when the former suddenly left and returned to the house, this time armed with a grenade.

Antonio then ordered a policeman, identified as SPO1 Osbert Fernando, who was reportedly trying to mediate, to get out of the way.

The grenade however exploded prematurely while in the possession of Antonio resulting to the amputation of his right hand.

Fernando and the judge were hit by shrapnel.Antonio and Fernando were taken to the hospital for treatment of their injuries.

Rosario sustained minor injuries from the blast.Antonio is facing Frustrated Murder and Illegal Possession of Explosive charges.  (Dan Toribio)
