The Sta. Maria Police Station has readied charges against a motorcycle thief who was caught in the act of stealing a motorcycle which was parked at the parking area of a local funeral parlor in Sta. Maria last Tuesday morning.

Police identified the suspect as Alnur Hashim y Basa, 36, of Simunul, Tawi-Tawi.

He was cornered by bystanders along Gov. Ramos Road, Sta. Maria right after he was spotted taking an DRM Honda motorcycle from a funeral parlor’s parking lot at around 5 a.m. Tuesday.

Police said the motorcycle was owned by Jeffrey Rañin y Garcellano, 47, married of Barangay Mercedes who was at that time attending a wake of his relative.

Investigation showed that while Rañin was at the funeral parlor, he discovered his motorcycle was no longer in the parking lot.

The incident immediately alerted people who were all present in the wake prompting some of them to go out of the compound where they spotted Hashim pushing the motorcycle away.

When Hashim sensed that he was already being chased, he left the motorcycle in the corner and ran towards Sta. Maria Central School. However, alert bystanders cornered him and allegedly some even mauled the suspect before he was later turned over to the police.

Hashim was armed with an icepick and reportedly even tried to attack the police and the bystanders.

Hashim was given a first aid by paramedics and later was taken to the Sta. Maria Police Station where he was detained.

It can be noted that a big number of motorcycles have been stolen in the city for the last quarter of the year. Most of the vehicles were stolen while parked at parking areas while some were forcibly taken at gun point by hold-uppers – Dan Toribio
