An ordinance which will provide scholarships for masteral and doctoral degrees for public school teachers was passed on first reading by the Zamboanga Sangguniang Panlungsod last Tuesday.

First District Councilor Rudy Lim, author of the ordinance, said that the ordinance is not only intended to financially assist teachers but aims to uplift their knowledge and capability.

The ordinance targets teachers who are teaching in public schools who hold a permanent status.

The program will initially provide annual scholarships to 30 teachers.

These teachers will be enrolled in government colleges and universities with a grant of P20,000 per school year for tuition and books.

The scholars will also be given a P10,000 fund for thesis writing for two years.

Lim said that the program will be given an initial funding of P4-million, to be taken from the city’s general funds.

The scholar will also be required to serve the city government for two years for every year of scholarship studies.

The proposed ordinance was passed to the committees on ordinances and resolution, education, and appropriation for further evaluation and public hearing.  (RGAAGo)
