Zamboanga city workers have asked for a P30 increase in wages during last Tuesday’s wage consultation meeting among labor officials, employers and workers.

Boboy Valerio, Employers Sector Representative, said that management is open to a wage hike for employees.

Valerio however said that the effects of the Tax Reform for Acceleration and inclusion program (TRAIN) and other pending bills that can affect the working sector cannot be fully ascertained at the present time.

Aside from this, the sardine company is still in closed fishing season status, and will resume operations this March.

This is one of the reasons why the effect of TRAIN cannot be fully measured at this time.

Valerio thus said that employers think that it is best to wait for the effects of TRAIN before making a decision on the wage hike to be implemented.

Wage Order No.19 is currently still in effect.

The next round of consultations will be held in Isabela, Ipil, Pagadian and Dipolog. The consultations are expected to end on March 15.

After this, another meeting will be held to consolidate all the data from the consultations.  (Liza Jocson)
