KAKAMPI MO ANG BATAS

BY Atty. BATAS MAURICIO

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… Your rulers are rebels, partners with thieves; they all love bribes and chase after gifts. They do not defend the cause of the fatherless; the widow’s case does not come before them…” (Isaiah 1:23, the Holy Bible).

POLITICIANS CHATTERING ABOUT PRESS FREEDOM ARE FRAUDS: The  politicians who endlessly chatter and hurl accusations that President Duterte is suppressing press freedom in the country are in reality just showing the great confusion in their minds. The truth is that their accusations are mere lies, in order to destroy the image of the President, hoping that they would be able to score public relations points in their favor.

Why am I saying this about their criticisms against Duterte on the issue of press freedom? Well, try to ask them if they have ever done anything at all to remove the one true obstacle to the freedom of the press in the Philippines—which are the present libel laws that impose jail terms as a penalty for those who write and air their comments that some consider unfavorable.

It has been a long time that these chatterers have been in power, and were thus in a position to cast libel out to truly uphold freedom of the press. But, did they even lift a finger to remove the laws on libel? If their professed desire to uphold press freedom in the country has even an iota of truth in it, they should have worked real hard to decriminalize libel. Since they have not done this, we cannot fault Filipinos in thinking that they are fools merely out to defraud the public.

FILIPINOS ARE A PITIABLE LOT: Filipinos are really a pitiable lot. Imagine, when, not too long ago someone wanted to raise the prices of rice, the staple food’s supply suddenly dwindled and even vanished in some places in our country. After our people became accustomed to higher prices per kilo of rice, supply suddenly flourished and became available.

The same had been shamelessly happening insofar as other basic commodities which Filipinos need in their day-to-day living are concerned. When businessmen dealing in these commodities found the urge to increase their profits, they would simply make the supply vanish to give the appearance of a supply crisis. After increased prices became accepted by consumers, supply would normalize and also become available.

Last Thursday, February 22, 2018, at about 3 p.m., I wanted to gas up at the PTT gas station at Bonifacio Drive, Port Area, Manila, straight from the regular meeting of the Rotary Club of Intramuros. Imagine again, no deliveries were allegedly made by the station’s supplier on that day, so motorists plying the Port Area routes were unable to buy gasoline. Oh well, I am sure gas prices would be increased too!

ROTARY’S “K.A. LITE PROJECT” BOOSTS LEARNING AMONG KIDS: I congratulate the Rotary Club of Intramuros Manila and the Rotary Club of Blacktown, Australia, on the success of their joint project called “KA Lite Project”. Under this program, the two clubs have been giving away personal computers which exclusively run some kind of an encyclopedia program to different schools or groups, to be used in instructing children in and out of schools.

According to Great President Aries Balanay of Intramuros, Past President Tess Sayas of Blacktown, and Intramuros Past President Floren Naguit, they personally witnessed, during a surprise and unannounced visit to a group of young kids afflicted with cancer at the Philippine General Hospital who were given KA Lite computers last year, the active use of the computers by the children who were so engrossed in studying under its instructions.

“We really were overjoyed because we saw that the children were using KA Lite computers in their studies, at a time when they did not even know we were coming to visit them,” Tess said. Aries, who is now a Jaycees Senator, on the other hand quipped that the computers are enticing the children to become well-versed in math science, and music, even if there is no Internet connection. Well, congratulations!!!!
