An Abu Sayyaf member was killed while a firearm was recovered during a gunbattle between members of the 68th Infantry Battalion and Abu Sayyaf bandits at Sitio Pali, Barangay Abong Abong, Maluso, Basilan yesterday morning.

Joint Task Force Basilan Commander Brig General Juvymax Uy ordered forces under the 64th Infantry Battalion and the 181st Infantry Battalion to block the retreating bandits.

Air assets were also deployed to provide air support to the troops.

After an hour-long firefight, the lifeless body of an Abu Sayyaf member and an M-14 rifle were recovered from the scene.

Troops conducted pursuit operations to go after the rebels.

“There will be no let-up (in the) operation against the Abu Sayyaf as our Commander-in-Chief himself has declared such since last year, said Lt. Gen. Carlito Galvez Jr, Western Mindanao Command chief in a statement.

Galvez congratulated JTF Basilan Chief Brig. Gen. Juvymax Uy for the latter’s accomplishment.  (LAJ)
