KAKAMPI MO ANG BATAS

BY Atty. BATAS MAURICIO

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… The Lord will bring a nation against you from far away, from the ends of the earth, like an eagle swooping down, a nation whose language you will not understand,  a fierce-looking nation without respect for the old or pity for the young. They will devour the young of your livestock and the crops of your land until you are destroyed…” (Deuteronomy 28:49-51, the Holy Bible).

AMERICANS WERE THE TRUE LEAD STARS OF EDSA 1986: Pardon me, Mr. President Duterte, but the ones who should truly get the credit for the EDSA 1986 power grab—or the brazen taking away of power from Filipino officials who were legitimately elected by the people at that time—should not be the Filipino people, but the Americans who masterminded and directed the entire shebang.

The history of the Philippines is clear. If Filipinos would be the only ones pursuing gargantuan maneuvers such as EDSA 1986, defeat would surely be their fate. That was the reason why during EDSA 1986, those who fought against President Marcos made sure that the sitting government of the Americans then was on their side. That was the true reason, Mr. President, why the Filipino government then was ousted. Americans were truly the lead stars of EDSA 1986.

WHY ARE MANY PROTESTING AGAINST DRUGS KILLINGS TODAY, WHEN THEY WERE SO SILENT PREVIOUSLY? I respect those who marched on the streets of Cebu City on February 24, 2018, allegedly to condemn the killings taking place in our country, particularly those done in the pursuit of the fierce war against illegal drugs launched by the Duterte government. I am one with our Cebuano citizens in that display of united action.

The only problem here was that, those who marched around Cebu last Saturday were eerily quiet during the incumbency of the country’s past presidents, at a time when many of our hapless countrymen—men, women, and children—were also mercilessly murdered, brutally raped and abused by drug syndicates, drug lords, and drug addicts. Why are the Cebu marchers showing their indignation only now, at this point that Duterte is the president?

DOUBLE STANDARD BY PRESS FREEDOM “ADVOCATES”: I am urgently calling upon those who claim that they are press freedom advocates, or those who say that they are defenders of the freedom of the press in the country. Please try to weigh in at this point on the libel case that former Health Secretary Janet Garin instituted against former Health Secretary Pauline Ubial, in connection with the controversial Dengvaxia issue.

Undeniably, you have been very loquacious and nauseatingly talkative about this freedom, but are now suddenly silent, saying nothing about the decriminalization of libel in the Philippines. Libel is the worst enemy of free expression. This suppresses free exchange of ideas. Why then are you not opposing libel? Why are you not moving as well to remove libel from the Revised Penal Code? Indeed, you are true exponents of double standards because of this!

PROBLEMS ON OFWs TO CONFINUE UNLESS WE GO BACK TO GOD SINCERELY: So, okay, the two suspects in the gruesome murder of OFW Joanna Demafeles have already been arrested and are due to be tried. But, is the problem of our overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who are abused, maltreated, and even killed while they are working abroad already solved? Clearly not yet, so we really nothing to crow about in those arrests.

We should continue to understand—and find remedies based on this—that Filipinos becoming OFWs was warned about by the Bible to happen against our children, because we have become a nation who no listen to the Word of God and who no longer obey His commands. The OFW problem can be licked if we, the entire Filipino nation, would go back sincerely to God, no matter how each one of us may call or address Him.
