The city government has bared plans to hire additional traffic enforcers in response to the worsening traffic condition  in the city.

Mary Angelique Go, City Administrator, said that the budget for hiring the new enforcers will come within the month.

The new group of enforcers is expected to man the streets after their briefing and training on basic traffic rules and regulations.

She,however, failed to say whether there is also an allocation for additional funds for training and other benefits for the  traffic personnel, a main issue discussed during a dialogue on traffic in the Sangguniang Panlungsod.

Go admitted that other factors such as sufficients support and proper enforcement is still needed to minimize congestion on city streets.

She added that they can enforce properly if given the corresponding support aside from manpower.

Aside from additional budget for allowances and training, the city also needs a towing vehicle, an impounding area and wheel clamps.Recall that Engr. Melito Alvin Manuel, OIC Traffic Enforcement Unit, said that additional traffic aids are required to help ease traffic in the city.

Manuel also reported the lack of hazard pay and training for traffic personnel.

There are currently 38 traffic enforcers deployed in city streets.  Manuel said that the city needs from 60 to 80 enforcers to be more efficient in traffic decongestion.   (RGAAGo)
