Some 15,000 people representing the different sectors of society participated in the grand civic military parade highlighting the 81st Dia de la Ciudad de Zamboanga Monday, February 26.

Mayor Beng Climaco personally led the parade that started from the City Fire Station in Ledesma Street passing through the main thoroughfares towards the City Hall grounds where the commemorative program keynoted by Finance Secretary Carlos “Sonny” Dominguez III, followed.

The parade participants came from the City Government, the national government agencies, the religious sector, CSOs and NGOs, the schools, the business sector, hospitals and other organizations, the barangays, urban poor and homeowners associations and the security sector.

The security sector showcased the assets of all branches of the Armed Forces of the Philippines including the Joint Task Force Zamboanga, the Police, as well as the Bureau of Fire Protection, the Bureau of Jail Management and other units.

Mayor Climaco in her speech thanked the different sectors for their active participation, as she lauded the roster of guests who are mostly Manila-based Zamboanguenos and members of the La Hermandad Zamboanguena, Filipino Chinese  Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation. Also present were appointees of the Duterte administration.

“What a better way to show your love for Zamboanga than to come over to the city and to celebrate the Dia de Zamboanga together with your fellow Zamboanguenos,” the mayor told the guests, as she thanked them for their continuous support and assistance to the city.

She also thanked Sec. Dominguez, who is a Zamboangueno by origin for gracing the event. “All the efforts that you do will help redound to the betterment of our country. We are here to be of help to you.”

The Dia de Zamboanga program was also highlighted by the awarding of this year’s Local Achievers. The awardees included Top Individual Taxpayer - Al Hasiman; Top Corporate taxpayer- Coca-Cola FEMSA Philppines, Inc.; Top Local Achievement for Sports - Chezca Luy Centeno for Billiard Women and Eumir Felix Marcial for boxing; Tourism-oriented establishment - Yakan Weaving Village; City Government Service- Eleanor Suarez of CHRMO and Community Service - Holcim Philippines, Inc.-Zamboanga.

Also presented with a certificate of recognition was the Zamboanga Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce for its unrelenting support to the City Government. (Sheila Covarrubias/PR)
