Archdiocese of Zamboanga Spokesperson Fr. Marciano Villagracia has reminded people on the negative effect of divorce on children amid moves to legalize divorce in the country.

“Will the children clap their hands once their parent finds it easy to separate? The first victim of divorce are the children,” Villagracia said.

He explained that a failed marriage is not an argument for divorce but a proof of the necessity that only mature and responsible people enter into marriage.

The church does not recognize a civil divorce because the state cannot dissolve what cannot be dissolved.

The church believes that God, as the author of marriage, establishes it as a permanent union that when two people marry, they form an unbreakable bond. Jesus himself thought that marriage is permanent. said Villagracia.

When entering into marriage, there must be maturity and they must be prepared emotionally and financially.

If they are already married, God must be the center of the relationship because it takes three to marry the bride, the groom, and God.

The proposed bill on divorce will still pass the house committee and the plenary and it will still pass the Senate.

According to Villagracia, there are many reasons why marriage fails.

Some do not have the right motive for marrying and  only marry for comfort particularly when the woman is already pregnant.

When marriage is not working or encountering problems Villagracia said that couples must undergo marriage counseling and divorce is not the solution. (R.G. A A. Go)
