The Bureau of Fire Protection is expected to issue a notice of violation to seven more business establishments for their alleged defiance in complying with provisions of the fire code.

The statement was made by Zamboanga Fire District Fire Marshall F/ Supt. Jhufel Brañanola after a random surprise inspection in major establishments located along the downtown area.

Brañanola said that at least seven establishments were found not to have a fully-equipped sprinkler system, a violation under Section 10.2.13.3 paragraph D, IRR of RA 9514, the Fire Code of the Philippines.

Based on the records of the BFP, some establishments have been issued a notice to correct violation followed by a series of inspections.

Despite all these, management refuse to comply with fire safety requirements.

“We have already warned them and advised them to correct their violations but they continue to ignore the notices and penalties that we gave them so we have to do our next move.  The law may be harsh but it is the law.  We have to implement our mandate whether they like it or not,” Brañanola said.

Brañanola said that the BFP will be imposing administrative sanctions to these establishments by requiring them to pay a fine at the Zamboanga City Fire District Office within the next three days.

If the seven establishments continue to ignore the notices and correct the deficiences, Brañanola said that he will be constrained to post a warning sign that the establishment is a fire hazard.

This could be followed by the issuance of an order for stoppage of operation and a closure order similar to what happened to a department store last month.  (Bhong Simbajon/ RMN News)
