The number of suspected measles cases in Zamboanga city has soared from 101 to 187 in just two weeks time, based on records of the City Health Office (CHO.)

Of the 101 blood samples that were initially sent to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) 19 specimens turned out to be positive for measles.

The RITM is still conducting tests on the rest of the samples.

The increase in the number of cases occurred amid the implementation of a massive immunization program against measles in the city of Zamboanga.

Dr. Dulce Amor Dagalea- Miravite, City Health Office OIC, said that while there are parents who are hesitant to have their children immunized, some have also allowed their children to be vaccinated by health personnel.

“Hopefully with the mass vaccination, pwede kita conele man control conel measles,” said Miravite.

The city government is targeting 121,000 children from 6 to 59 months to be vaccinated with the MMR (Mumps, Measles and Rubella) vaccine.

Recall that Zamboanga Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco issued Executive Order BC-333-2018 declaring a measles outbreak in the city of Zamboanga.  (RGAAGo)
