Smuggled rice worth P125-million which was  seized in Olutanga municipality last month is still at the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) warehouse waiting for disposition.

Jacob Andain, Bureau of Customs Zamboanga Chief of Administration, said that no one has come to their office to claim the confiscated item.

Andain made the assurance that the contraband will not get lost like what happened to more than a thousand sacks of sugar apprehended in the year 2015.

Recall that 1,170 sacks of sugar was discovered by Bantay Dagat personnel aboard the ML Ylaeza Maye.  The motor launch was said to have drifted near the Bolong coastline, an east coast village of Zamboanga city, after it run out of gasoline  on the morning of January 6.

Meanwhile, just last month, P125-million worth of smuggled rice was apprehended aboard the J-Phia off the seas of Olutanga municipality by coast guard personnel.

This constitutes the contraband presently kept at the PPA warehouse.

Andain said that the smuggled rice will be kept inside the warehouse for proper disposition.  (Remus Ong)
