Mayor Beng Climaco has welcomed the inclusion of the Curuan-Sibuco road project, one of the subprojects proposed under Improving Growth Corridors in Mindanao Road Sector Project (IGCMRSP) of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

DPWH-Manila representatives and consultant Nestor Obcena the other day met with Mayor Climaco together with Executive Assistant for Infrastructure Antonio Orendain Jr. and representatives from the City Engineer’s Office and City Planning and Development Coordinator’s Office to formally inform the city about the status of the project.

The DPWH is in the stage of preparing for the Resettlement and Indigenous Peoples Plan (RIPP)  for the Curuan-Sibuco Road project after the completion of the feasibility study.

Mayor Climaco said the project is a welcome development for the city and will help bring progress and development in the area.

The project has a width of 30 linear meters and total length of 35 linear meters, 21 linear meters of which are in Zamboanga City particularly Curuan covering the sitios of Presa, Sto. Nino, Sapa Manok and Camp Pilar as well as sitios Candiz, San Francisco and Sibutad. The project will be funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The DPWH team that met with the mayor conducted a series of coordination/ public consultation meetings with the concerned barangay officials and affected residents in Curuan from March 2-3 in line with the resettlement and indigenous people’s plan or RIPP.

The DPWH team was composed of Ocena of the Katahira Engineering International, the firm that DPWH commissioned as consultant; Engr. Evangeline Fernando of DPWH-Manila and Engr. Deng Reyes of the DPWH Regional office.

Meanwhile, another project included in the IGCMRSP is the proposed by pass road for coastal barangays in the city. Nonetheless, the project is still in the feasibility study stage. (Sheila Covarrubias)
