The Zamboanga City Council passed a proposed ordinance establishing a city crematorium and columbarium to cater to residents in Zamboanga city who wish to have their loved ones cremated.

The ordinance was passed on first reading during the council’s regular session last Tuesday.

In the ordinance, the city will offer cremation and columbarium services for a fee which can be availed of by residents and people residing in nearby areas.

Under the ordinance, the proposed crematorium will be located in barangay Mampang.

Councilor Jimmy Villaflores, author of the ordinance, assured that legal, technical, and health issues will be addressed.

“Amo se priority del gobyerno man establish se aqui na ciudad cay tiene kita funeraria pero nohay kita crematorium,” Villaflores said.

The machine for cremation alone reportedly costs P8-million. This does not include other facilities such as the building.

If this will pass, only the city will have the said facility in Mindanao. For those who need burial assistance this can also be used, Villaflores said.

A committee hearing will be scheduled where the council invited officials from the Department of Health, City Health Office, City Administrator, City Treasurer, and the City Legal Office. (RGAAGo)
