In celebration of women empowerment, Mayor Beng Climaco urged all women to be brave and strong amidst challenges and difficulties.

Speaking to hundreds of women and men who joined the Marcha de las Mujeres in line with the International Women’s Day on March 8, the chief executive recognized the importance of opportunities and giving women from different sectors a voice of their own in order to make change happen.

“God will make change happen, starting with you, so please be brave and be strong,” Climaco said.

She also called on women, particularly young girls, to stand up and speak for themselves, and to believe in their capabilities.

“Never allow people to criticize you, and tell you that you are not working, that you are not capable. I am a woman, I am capable,” Climaco declared.

The local government of Zamboanga celebrated in solidarity with the nation the International Women’s Day, a celebration of women’s social, economic, cultural and political successes all over the world.

Aside from the annual Marcha de las Mujeres, and the Women’s fair at Centro Latino, this year’s celebration also served to recognize exemplary women from different sectors and fields.

The women honorees were Imelda Dagus, Capt. Jinky Olandag, Dr. Dulce Miravite, Remedios Marmoleño, Rosanna Villanueva, Patricia Sy, Queenie Casimiro, Espie Hupida, and Angelita Ilul for their contributions in the field of security, health, education, volunteerism for women and indigenous people, trade and tourism, and civic organization.

The National Women’s Month Celebration every March is part of the worldwide observance of the International Women’s Day (IWD).

From 2017 – 2022, the Women’s Month celebration will banner the theme “We Make Change for Women” to highlight the empowerment of women as active contributors of development.  (Jasmine Mohammadsali)
