The Department of Health (DOH) has expressed alarm over the high number of measles cases in Region 9.

A total of 499 measles cases have been recorded in the region from January up to the present.

Of this number, more than half or 257 cases come from Zamboanga City, an area which already declared an outbreak of the disease.  Zamboanga City also recorded four deaths attributed to Measles.

Isabela City also declared an outbreak with 55 cases.  Zamboanga del Sur has 56 cases, Zamboanga del Norte has 74 while Zamboanga Sibugay has 57 measles cases.

Dr. Cheryl Rebollos Sarmiento, DOH-9 Family Health Cluster Head, underscored effective responses to further prevent the spread of the disease.

This include an effective and massive immunization program, disease surveillance and information dissemination among target groups.

Zamboanga City has declared an outbreak of measles and is conducting a massive immunization program.

Children from 6 to 8 months are being vaccinated with the Meales and Rubeela vaccine while children from 9 months to 4 years old are being vaccinated with the Mumps, Measles and Rubella vaccine.  (RGAAGo)
