Zambo team ranks 4th in Batang Pinoy-Mindanao leg PDF Print E-mail

The Zamboanga City delegation to the recently concluded Batang Pinoy Mindanao Leg ranked fourth out of the total 77 local government teams that participated in the weeklong games in Oroquieta City in Misamis Occidental from March 6-12.

The city hauled a total of 79 medals – 38 gold, 13 silver and 28 bronze with Archery team getting the most number of medals followed by the  karatedo team, pencak silat, arnis, swimming, athletics and boxing and chess.

The pencak silat team was over-all champion in the category with a total of 11 gold medals, 1 silver and 1 gold medals.

City Sports Director Dr. Cecil Atilano, who joined the delegation together with Council Committee Chair on Sports Coun. Bong Atilano said the Zamboanga delegation was fully supported by the City Government.

The athletes arrived in Zamboanga City from Oroquieta City Tuesday morning.

Mayor Climaco is expected to present certificates to the athletes in recognition of their victorious representation of Zamboanga City in the Mindanao-wide sports competition.

Batang Pinoy is the national youth sports competition for athletes under 15 years old and includes out of school youth. It was established through Executive Order 44 signed by then President Joseph Estrada in 1998. The first edition was held in Bacolod in 1999. (Sheila Covarrubias)
