Parents of nearly 1,500 children in Zamboanga City refused to have the latter immunized with the MMR vaccine as an offshoot of negative effects brought about by Dengvaxia, another vaccine to counter Dengue.

This as the Department of Health (DOH) expressed alarm over the increasing number of measles cases in Region 9 including Isabela City, an area which  recently declared an outbreak of measles cases.

Dr. Ivy Rozeth Saavedra-Iturralde, Head- City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit, said that the health team is still trying to convince parents to have their children vaccinated.

“Tiene pa rin tan refuse. Even if ansina, after kita tan inject na otro maga bata tan revisit kita kanila. Ta habla kita el benefit, disadvantages y cosa pasa si hende pwede man immunize conel bata pero si no quiere, we cannot force,” Iturralde said.

The City Health Office has vaccinated nearly 43,000 children since the program started last February 19.  The immunizationm program against measles will run until March 23.

The City Health Office is aiming to immunize a total of 121,000 children in the different health centers and through house to house campaign.

Zamboanga City now has more than 200 suspected measles cases from January up to the present.

The top 10 barangays affected by measles are barangays: Sangali, Busay Sacol Island, San Jose Cawa Cawa, Arena Blanco, Mercedes, Calarian, Camino Nuevo, Sta Catalina, Putik, and Guiwan.  (RGAAGo)
