The Philippine Coast Guard Western Mindanao is set to start construction on its new headquarters in Tawi Tawi after recent ground breaking rites.

The new Search and Rescue base will sit on a five-hectare lot in Sibutu, Tawi-Tawi.

Capt. Ronnie Gil Gavan, PCG Western Mindanao District Commander, said that the base includes a port for sea vessels, high tech equipment for communications and radar for inclement weather conditions.

The new headquarters will also feature a multi-purpose building for recreation and indoor programs and officers’ quarters.

The Search and Rescue headquarters is also intended to house victims of human trafficking, and can serve as a place of refuge for fishermen, victims of piracy and other high crimes committed at sea.

The project is funded by the national government.  (Allen Abastillas)
