City to open processing center for mendicants Print

The City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) yesterday announced that the office will soon be opening its processing center for mendicants to be located at R.T. Lim Boulevard this April.

Ma. Socoro Rojas, CSWDO officer, said in an interview that the office building that will be used as the center for the mendicants will be the Magbasa Kita Foundation in R.T. Lim Boulevard. It was constructed thru the funding of former Senator Santa Nina Rasul.

She said that all mendicants will stay and be processed in the said area instead of bringing them to the Social Development Center (SDC) located at Barangay Sta Barbara. She stressed that It is difficult if the mendicants will not be separated as they are influencing other children and residents of the SDC.

The said area will have a room for male and female, it will be manned by a social worker, three staff, and it can house 30 mendicants.

Initial budget of P1 million was allocated for the operation of the said center for the food and other needs of the residents.

Meanwhile, Rojas said that continuous rescue operation is being conducted by the CSWDO for these mendicants so that they will not be loitering around the city streets. Aside from this, she also bared that they are also strictly implementating the city’s Anti-Mendicancy Ordinance.

In this city, there are an estimated 500 mendicants that they came from other nearby places while other are Internally Displaced Person (IDPs ) from Kasangyangan and Buguc.

“Debe ayuda el barangay y para na publiko they should also not give. (referring to these mendicants),” Rojas said. (R.G. A A. Go)
