A man who was bitten by a stray dog later died of rabies after eating the meat of the dog that bit him.

Twelve other people were reportedly infected after they ate the same dog meat partaken by the first victim.

The strange incident took place in Mahayag, Zamboanga del Sur last February.

Department of Health records described the victim as a man in his early 40’s.  No other information was given to identify the victim.

Health personnel said that prior to the incident, the victim had been bitten by a stray dog.

Angered by what transpired, the man killed the dog and ate its meat, unaware that the meat was infected with rabies.

The victim manifested signs and symptoms of rabies after 16 days.

Nieto Fernandez, DOH-9 Regional Rabies Coordinator, said that at least 12 individuals, most of who are relatives of the man, were also infected with rabies after eating the dog meat.

The bizaare was the first case of rabies  infecting humans recorded for the year in region 9.  (RGAAGo)
