Zamboanga City ushered in the summer season with fun and entertainment attracting and luring families and beach goers spending Easter Sunday at the Golf Beach and Country Club in barangay Calarian yesterday, April 1.

Dubbed as Zambo Summer Fest Opening Salvo, the beach party included fun games and song and dance performances topbilled by Ayala Tech All Stars, Tweena Campos and the Ignite Volunteers, New Soul band with a special performance by the Star wars fan film cast directed by Tennyl Canlas. Featured game was the Easter Egg Hunting with other fun games that included Pinoy Henyo, Face the Cookie, Group Newspaper Dance and many more.

Mayor Beng Climaco said the Summer Festival is one of the important annual festivals intended to provide wholesome entertainment to students and youth including adults during the summer vacation. She enjoined everyone to participate in the different activities lined up for the month.

The mayor thanked the participants during the opening salvo and the Special Events team headed by Christian Olasiman for organizing the activity and the other events slated for the summer season.

Other activities include the Fiesta na Isla de Sta. Cruz 2018 Year 2 from April 14-May 12; Dia de Mam Caling marking the birth anniversary of the late Mayor Maria Clara Lobregat on April 16 that will be marked by a commemorative mass at 4pm at the Pasonanca Church followed by a program and Chav-Pop Night at 5pm at the Jardin Maria Clara in Pasonanca; Comida de Zamboanga cooking competition highlighting chavacano cuisine on April 28 at 4pm at the Jardin Maria Clara; Zamboanga Hiphop Dance Competition 2018: The Movie Challenge on May 5, 1 PM, at the Mayor Vitaliano Agan Coliseum, and the Dia de Gen. Vicente Alvarez on May 18.

In line with the Dia de Gen. Vicente Alvarez, a Neo-Ethnic Dance Competition will be held at 9 AM at the City Hall grounds.

The summer calendar will conclude with the Festival de las Bellas y Flores, the city’s annual take on the traditional Santacruzan. The parade of beauties will be on May 26, 4PM, from the City Fire Station to Paseo del Mar.

Aside from the city government’s activities, other events spearheaded by private groups and individuals will also be part of the summer festival calendar. (Sheila Covarrubias)
