One person was killed when two unidentified men tried to ambush a policeman in barangay Talisayan last Thursday.

Chief Insp. Helen Galvez, Police Regional Office -9 Information Officer, said that the incident happened at Purok 5, Talisayan while PO2 Edgar Abaa Gaganting, a policeman assigned at Zamboanga Police Station 4, was conducting surveillance activities on personalities involved in illegal drugs in the area.

While en route to Talisayan, Gaganting observed a black motorcycle with two riders tailing him.

When the suspects and the policeman reached Purok 5, the motorcycle driver attempted to draw his gun, an act prompting Gaganting to take out his own firearm and shoot the suspect.

The motorcycle driver, identified as 27-year old Rodel Blanco Fernando, a resident of Zone 1 in Ayala, was hit and died on the spot.

Fernando’s companion ran away and eluded arrest.

Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) recovered a 9mm pistol belonging to Fernando at the crime scene.

The police officer was placed under the custody of Zamboanga City Police Station 9.  (Dan Toribio)
